Cezanne in Provence
Published on the centenary of the death of Paul C?zanne (1839–1906), this stunning book celebrates the artist’s depictions of his native Provence. While C?zanne is recognized as one of the fathers of the modern movement, this publication focuses on his own sense of achievement, especially as a painter exploring the landscape in and around his hometown of Aix-en- Provence. Although he spent time elsewhere in France, especially Paris, C?zanne repeatedly returned to Provence, where he lived nearly all of the last twenty years of his life.

In studios at the Jas de Bouffan and at Les Lauves, and on painting expeditions into the surrounding countryside, C?zanne created some of his most original and compelling works, not only landscapes but also portraits of local characters, friends, and family; still lifes, and imaginative figure paintings, such as the monumental bathers painted in the last decade of his life.

This book is a lovely accompaniment to the Cezanne in Provence exhibit. The narration is beautifully written and describes the beautiful landscapes that Cezanne painted. It provides an interesting chronology of Cezanne’s life and works.

Customer Review: A Concise History of Painting by Levey
This book contains many famous paintings in full color.
For this reason alone, it is worth the price. (You) imagine
having a replication of the “Creation of Adam” by
Michelangelo. There is a detailed critique which accompanies
each picture. This book would be very helpful for serious
art students and patrons of the fine arts. It would be a gem
for any student doing a book report. The work would be
invaluable for any art patron preparing to visit a local museum
to view some of the pieces depicted . The purchase is
a worthy addition to any history of art collection or
portion thereof.

Customer Review: Great Introduction to Painting
I have owned this book for many years and regard it as a treasured old friend. Accordingly, I have been moved to write a review of this book in an attempt to correct the unreasonable calumnies put upon it in the earlier customer review. ‘Frpm Giotto to Cezanne’ is probably the best introduction to the history of painting that anybody could have. It also has the added bonus that Levey’s prose is lucid and intelligent. Criticising this book because it doesn’t deal with more female artists is a silly canard. I’m sick and tired of people thinking that we have to be politically correct in our attitude to the past. This book isn’t meant to be a detailed history of painting but a concise introduction to the most important artists and their works. Artemisia Gentileschi is simply not important or good enough to be included. Neither were most of the American artists of the period, when the US was a cultural backwater.

Assembled to accompany a major retrospective of the artist’s work, “Cezanne,” by four art scholars and curators, includes 258 large color plates and 350 black-and-white pictures of paintings, drawings and sketches, organized by chronological period.

Each gorgeous plate is accompanied by the work’s provenance and exhibitions. Accompanying text describes the painting’s personal and historical context as well as critical responses at the time and through the years.

The book also includes quotes from Cezanne on art and two lengthy, thoughtful essays on “A Century of Cezanne Criticism.”

A volume which will afford hours and years of pleasure to anyone interested in Cezanne’s art.

Customer Review: A book worthy of “the father of us all”
Picasso, speaking about modern art and artists, referred to Cezanne as “the father of us all.” He was that rare artist whose vision -and ability to express it- was so keen and unique that it can actually impact the way we se the world around us. (How often I look into the trees and think “that looks like a Cezanne.”) More than any other book of his work this volume succeeds in showing the sweep and depth of Cezanne’s genius. The reproductions are superb and plentiful. The descriptive text accompanying each image, while interesting, needs to be taken with a grain of salt, as is often the case in catalogues of this nature. But the truth is I buy art books for the pictures! For text, try Rewald’s book which is also excellent and contains some paintings not elsewhere printed, and deals extensively with the relationship between Cezanne and Zola. I also recommend Gotz Adriani’s book on Cezanne. But if you can only have one, this is it.
