Customer Review: Meticulously Dull
This book is probably a Phd dissertation. It spends a lot of time focused on sorting out trivial or outmoded arguments about Cezanne and how his art was created. All the while, the author offers little of any insight of his own other than his own highly equivocal attitude towards Cezanne. He obviously got bored writing this because Cezanne is a great and exciting artist but you would not know it from this author. Any doubts about what I am saying? Read the last paragraph of the book.

Customer Review: you’ve never known cezanne…and you never will.
The title of my review may cause you to think that I didn’t like this book…on the contrary, Shiff provides such a sophisticated argument about evolution of C?zanne’s painting through his development of the concepts “maker and finder”. Maker is the artist that “discovers” a style and develops that style in his/her work. Finder is the artist looking for a style. (Obviously an incredibly reductive summary of the two terms). Shiff compellingly argues that C?zanne exists as both maker and finder. This book isn’t a quick read…but anyone attempting to tackle such a complex artist as C?zanne, couldn’t possibly write a simple, one-dimensional book. I will be using this book in my impressionism class this winter. Hats off to Professor Shiff…I’ve never seen anything better written on C?zanne.

Customer Review: Learning to Look
As an art student Paul Cezanne became the paragon upon which I measured all other subsequent painters. The writer that taught me to see him as the North Star in that vast, swirling sky of artists was Meyer Schapiro. Having read the above book literally a dozen or more times I have found that it is an inexhaustible treasure. Mr. Schapiro’s insights are both scholarly and poetic. He above all seems to understand that Cezanne, while instrumental as a precursor to cubism, was first and foremost a great individual artist. Going to the Cezanne retrospective in Philadelphia several years ago I remember the first thing that came to my mind was how right Mr. Schapiro had been to avoid all the fussy and downright foolish connections that other critics are constantly making between Cezanne and modern art. What Mr. Schapiro concentrates on rather is C?zannes paintings and not his influence - this is most refreshing. He above all others I have read seems to have an uncanny understanding of Cezanne as both a man and an artist. He writes that C?zanne’s; “…detached contemplation of his subjects arises from a passionate aspiring nature that seeks to master its own impulses through an objective attitude to things.” I can only think that this must be true of Mr. Schapiro also. Each sentence is laid down with the care that Cezanne put into laying down each stroke of paint and as such his writing possesses a gravity that I have never found in another critic’s work with the exception of Roger Fry. The beginning of the book provides a comprehensive overview of C?zanne’s work and a brief outline of his life but the final 3/4 quarters of the book is structured as follows: superb color reproduction on the right hand page and a few paragraphs of commentary on the left page. These enables one to simply open it at any given time, find a desirable painting and read the commentary directly next to it. Structure in this way, the book became for me a source to meditate upon the good in art when I was surrounded by the confusion of trying to find myself among other young artists. Not being a scholar I found this book to be accessible and enriching. Mr. Schapiro writes with such sincere warmth and wisdom that when I heard of his death a few years ago I was saddened as if I had lost a friend and mentor. I hope this wonderful book brings as much joy and inspiration to you as it has for me.

Rewald’s biography of Cezanne is a very fine piece of work. It is beautifully written with substantial information about the artist & his work. As for all reputable art books, the paper quality is very good to render lovely reproductions of the paintings.

Customer Review: Well-Worth The Hefty Price
I have read many books on Cezanne over the past 10 years and in my opinion this is the best. For a combination of well-written text and excellent reproductions of the paintings this book cannot be beat. The text is jargon free. Mr. Rewald was a wonderful writer and he gives you a warm and sympathetic biography of a great artist and complex and difficult man. Cezanne was very neurotic. He had a fear of women and would not use nude models. His famous bather series was worked up from photographs and plaster casts, etc. He could be very anti-social: he sometimes would cross the street to avoid meeting someone he knew. He was very emotional and struggled to keep his emotions under control. This was reflected in his work. His early work was full of violence and shadows and you feel as though he barely was able to keep himself in check as he coated the canvas in a thick impasto. The later, carefully controlled and beautifully harmonized works are the more familiar to the general public. The cover gives you some indication of the beautiful reproductions which are inside this book. This is a great addition and in my opinion a must have for anyone’s art library.

Some really good background and context for SL, and some good detailed tips for doing things like creating and finessing your avatar, but I (and a lot of others I met) spent a long time stuck on the introduction Island and couldn’t find a way off and no help from the ‘Guide’ book. Took me some persistence to really get going in SL and the book didn’t really help me in the ‘Rough Guide’ way I’d have liked. Still - if you’ve alreayd got mates in SL, you’ll be fine and this book can help add a few fininshing tweaks (although you can probably work them out for yourself and have fun doing it.

I do strongly recommend this book for it is packed with invaluable advice for the Second Life newcomer. It is perhaps a mark of this books’ quality that it has yet to become superceeded as a definitive introduction to Second Life. The downside to this is that despite the fact that it has only been published for a few months much of its content is old - such is the pace of change in Second Life. Nevertheless it is a superbly crafted publication with great layout and illustrations. Instead of merely acting as an intstruction manual there is also a great deal of background information on subjects such as the history of the development of Second Life, regular Second Lifers anecdotal observations and indepth analysis of successful avatars. Undoubtedly there will be a revised and updated edition but until then this book still manages to serve as the best introduction to the subject.

Customer Review: From this book, it is easy to see how people are devoted to geocaching
Geocaching is an interesting hobby and it is easy to see why people could become devoted to it. It is a sport where people will place a “treasure” at a location, note the location in GPS coordinates and then post the coordinates on a website devoted to geocaching. Practitioners check the site and then use GPS receivers to search for the “treasure.” There are ego points for the cleverness of the hide and being First-To-Find (FTF) and there are guidelines for what locations are suitable for caching and what one can do when the “treasure” is found. A more extreme form of the sport involved placing the cache in a location that requires advanced techniques for access such as climbing a mountain, scuba diving or using a helicopter.

Cezanne describes the sport, points out some of the more obvious and realistic rules and interviews several people about the attraction they feel for geocaching. Since they are so rugged, old ammunition boxes are commonly used to store the cache. Clearly, carrying and then hiding an old ammunition box near a sensitive site such as a bridge will get the attention of law enforcement and should not be done.

While I will most likely never engage in this sport, it is easy to understand why there are people devoted to it and who consider it an uplifting experience. The explanations of the hows and joys of geocaching are well done, it offers the challenge of treasure hunting, the opportunity to interact with people of similar interests and a chance to commune with nature in a positive way.

Once again Mila Boutan does a fantastic job with her art activity packs for children. I have ordered most of them and they all offer clear concise information of the author and his techniques aswell as fun proposals to draw immitating the artist’s way. This is wonderful book to get the children up to date on Cezanne’s still life and landscapes. The end project is really “Cezanne” like. Both my 8 yr old and my 5 yr old enjoyed the book very much.
