Though he spent much of his career in his native France, Paul C?zanne (1839–1906)––a stylistic innovator who constantly struggled to perfect his art––played a hugely influential role in modernism worldwide. This handsome book is the first to focus on C?zanne’s works and reputation in Britain, where he was a key figure in the great debate about modernism that took place in the early years of the 20th century.
Published on the centenary of his death, C?zanne in Britain features beautiful reproductions of forty works that cover the full range of his oeuvre––paintings, drawings, watercolors, and prints––along with accompanying descriptive entries. Essays trace his artistic development from its beginnings in the 1860s until his death, providing a chronological overview of his career and stylistic evolution. They also address the fascinating role British dealers, collectors, museums, and critics played in establishing his reputation domestically and abroad. A chronology and full list of C?zanne’s works in British collections complete this important survey.

Conversations with C?zanne (Documents of Twentieth-Century Art)
Michael Doran has gathered texts by contemporaries of Paul C?zanne (1839-1906)–including artists, critics, and writers–that illuminate the influential painter’s philosophy of art especially in his late years. The book includes historically important essays by a dozen different authors, including Emile Bernard, Joaquim Gasquet, Maurice Denis, and Ambroise Vollard, along with selections from C?zanne’s own letters.
In addition to the material included in the original French edition of the book, which has also been published in German, Italian, Spanish, and Japanese, this edition contains an introduction written especially for it by noted C?zanne scholar Richard Shiff. The book closes with Lawrence Gowing’s magisterial essay, “The Logic of Organized Sensations,” first published in 1977 and long out of print.
C?zanne’s work, and the thinking that lay behind it, have been of inestimable importance to the artists who followed him. This gathering of writings will be of enormous interest to artists, writers, art historians–indeed to all students of modern art.

Paul Cezanne: How He Amazed The World (Adventures in Art)

Customer Review: Recommend to any bibliophile Ten stars!!
‘Throughout the course of my life, I’ve been an explorer, an actor, a murderer, and a priest. I’ve saved some lives and taken others. I’ve written bestsellers and I’ve been illiterate. I’ve owned a chateaux in France and I’ve begged for bread crusts on the streets of London. In other words, I’ve read books’. Thus the author writes. Now I have to admit that I don’t read fiction and for the most part the authors writes a great deal about the subject of fiction, novels. But I appreciate anyone who is a bibliophile like myself because books are the one thing I budget for. Keep the clothes, shoes, Starbucks, and other ’stuff’ that most Americans gravitate to. Want to give me a gift? Gift certificates to a book store rate #1 on my list. And like the author I believe children exposed to books at a young age, become by and large book lovers. I also tend to believe that children who are allowed to read for pleasure are also more inclined to want to read books we adults suggest. Sadly, way to many children in public schools are allowed such a short amount of time to read in school that most never become book lovers. It takes more than a half an hour to a child to get into what they are reading, and no sooner are they hooked but they are told to go on to the next class or subject. About six years ago I read that the country with the most readers or buyers of books was Iceland. And I know that in other countries one can find much more serious lovers of books than here in the states. Books that are serious and not the self help fluff that to many Americans consume. So I highly recommend this book. Buy a copy for your local library and expose other people to the authors wit and wisdom.
Customer Review: An explanation of reading as a passion
As an avid lifelong and omnivorous reader, there were many times while reading this book when the thought “That describes me” exploded into my brain. Cezanne is clearly someone with a passion for reading and she interviews several people with the same beliefs. She also describes many of the approaches she takes to reading, writing and discovering new books. To lovers of reading, books are food; we can no more exist without reading material than we can without food and water. When a really good book is found, sleep becomes a secondary consideration and for short periods of time, even food, sleep and bathroom breaks are shunted aside. If you love reading, then this is a book that will stir your emotional strings. However, if you are not a lover of reading or anywhere close to being described as a lover of reading, then quite frankly, it will probably bore you.
