Customer Review: It’s Real
I had an original copy of this book 30 years ago, when it first came out (I think it was in 1977 or 1978) - at the time, I was living in Berkley, California and read about 1/3 of the book and put it down. I liked it then but lost interest. However, I decided, for my own reasons, to read it again, and bought a copy less than a month ago and am almost done and I have to say that I believe this book is really a channelled view of what Paul Cezanne thought about while he painted. I think it’s fair to say that Cezanne, himself, might not have talked nearly as much about his work as what’s in the book - but the book is not Cezanne talking - it’s his World View of paintings - and Jane Roberts, though some curious circumstance - happened to channel that World View. I myself, as an artist who knows a lot about Paul Cezanne - am struck by the subtle insights that could not possibly have come from Jane Roberts. But did it come from Paul Cezanne? In a sense, Yes. We can’t really evaluate a book like this in the normal way - you have to pick it up and make sense of it yourself. I for one, do recommend this book to artists interested in what Cezanne was actually thinking while he painted. I’ll be in Aix in a couple of days and will visit Paul Cezanne’s studio and hopefully, what I read in this book will complement my trip. [...]
Customer Review: “Rambunctious Creativity”
This remarkable little book was written in 1976, before Jane’s physical challenges fully manifested. It shows a life lived to the fullest, and raises questions about what creativity is, where inspiration comes from, and what we leave behind when our “earth lives” are finished. The “Cezanne” material, “dictated” to Jane, is must reading for visual artists and for anyone interested in painting. It’s especially significant as Jane had absolutely no background in art, although she was married to a painter. Where did this material come from? Did Jane make it all up? How could she? What is creativity? Is she “channeling” the “real” Cezanne? What does that mean? Really, quite an extraordinary read.

This book is an exploration of ideas within the context of culture history. It involves an ideational reversal of the usual relationship existing between psychotherapists and artists. Instead of approaching the phenomenon of art from within a scientific frame of reference, psychotherapy is approached from within an aesthetic frame of reference. This unorthodox procedure proves to be productive in generating novel perspectives and new meanings in what are seen to be the twin phenomena of modern art and psychotherapy. Freud and Cezanne were key figures among those instrumental in the transformation of nineteenth century Western consciousness into twentieth century consciousness. Their influence continues unabated as we move into a new century. There are continuing radical implications in their thought that have yet to be fully realized.

This poster is of Paul Cezanne’s Basket of Apples. This still life shows a basket full of apples, and more apples loose on the table. Also on the table is a plate of bread, a bottle and a white tablecloth. This poster measures approx. 24″ x 36″ Paul Cezanne (January 19, 1839 - October 22, 1906) was a French artist and Post-Impressionist painter who laid the foundations of the transition from the 19th century (Impressionism) to a new and radically different world of art in the 20th century (cubism). Cezanne’s explorations of geometric simplification and optical phenomena inspired Picasso, Braque, Gris and others to experiment with ever more complex multiple views of the same subject

C?zanne/Pissarro, Johns/Rauschenberg: Comparative Studies on Intersubjectivity in Modern Art
This book presents a comparative study of two pairs of collaborative artists who worked closely with one another. The first pair, C?zanne and Pissarro, contributed to the emergence of modern art. The second pair, Johns and Rauschenberg, contributed to the demise of modern art. In each case, the two artists entered into a rich and challenging artistic exchange and reaped enormous benefits from this interaction. Joachim Pissarro’s comparative study suggests that these interactive dialogues were of great significance for each artist as well.

Customer Review: Beautiful book
Rewald’s biography of Cezanne is a very fine piece of work. It is beautifully written with substantial information about the artist & his work. As for all reputable art books, the paper quality is very good to render lovely reproductions of the paintings. It is very nicely presented & a pleasure to read. . . or just look at the paintings.
Customer Review: Well-Worth The Hefty Price
I have read many books on Cezanne over the past 10 years and in my opinion this is the best. For a combination of well-written text and excellent reproductions of the paintings this book cannot be beat. The text is jargon free. Mr. Rewald was a wonderful writer and he gives you a warm and sympathetic biography of a great artist and complex and difficult man. Cezanne was very neurotic. He had a fear of women and would not use nude models. His famous bather series was worked up from photographs and plaster casts, etc. He could be very anti-social: he sometimes would cross the street to avoid meeting someone he knew. He was very emotional and struggled to keep his emotions under control. This was reflected in his work. His early work was full of violence and shadows and you feel as though he barely was able to keep himself in check as he coated the canvas in a thick impasto. The later, carefully controlled and beautifully harmonized works are the more familiar to the general public. The cover gives you some indication of the beautiful reproductions which are inside this book. This is a great addition and in my opinion a must have for anyone’s art library.

Cezanne and the End of Impressionism: A Study of the Theory, Technique, and Critical Evaluation of Modern Art

Drawing on a broad foundation in the history of nineteenth-century French art, Richard Shiff offers an innovative interpretation of C?zanne’s painting. He shows how C?zanne’s style met the emerging criteria of a “technique of originality” and how it satisfied critics sympathetic to symbolism as well as to impressionism. Expanding his study of the interaction of C?zanne and his critics, Shiff considers the problem of modern art in general. He locates the core of modernism in a dialectic of making (technique) and finding (originality). Ultimately, Shiff provides not only clarifying accounts of impressionism and symbolism but of a modern classicism as well.

Customer Review: Meticulously Dull
This book is probably a Phd dissertation. It spends a lot of time focused on sorting out trivial or outmoded arguments about Cezanne and how his art was created. All the while, the author offers little of any insight of his own other than his own highly equivocal attitude towards Cezanne. He obviously got bored writing this because Cezanne is a great and exciting artist but you would not know it from this author. Any doubts about what I am saying? Read the last paragraph of the book.

Customer Review: you’ve never known cezanne…and you never will.
The title of my review may cause you to think that I didn’t like this book…on the contrary, Shiff provides such a sophisticated argument about evolution of C?zanne’s painting through his development of the concepts “maker and finder”. Maker is the artist that “discovers” a style and develops that style in his/her work. Finder is the artist looking for a style. (Obviously an incredibly reductive summary of the two terms). Shiff compellingly argues that C?zanne exists as both maker and finder. This book isn’t a quick read…but anyone attempting to tackle such a complex artist as C?zanne, couldn’t possibly write a simple, one-dimensional book. I will be using this book in my impressionism class this winter. Hats off to Professor Shiff…I’ve never seen anything better written on C?zanne.
