Another Cezanne: A Biographical Fantasy
Customer Review: Interesting views about Cezanne’s vision & practice
Thompson mixes fact and fiction to capture the artist as he thinks and works. Imaginary characters mingle with historical ones, allowing for surprising views of Cezanne painting still lifes in his studio and landscapes in the field. The things imagined are thoroughly rooted in the historical evidence but by the devices of fiction given new life. The artist comes alive in ways not possible in conventional forms of biography where the writer is constrained by known evidence. Thompson who is a painter seems to have drawn from direct experiences in painting to interpret and imagine how Cezanne faced certain issues in his art. “Another Cezanne” is driven less by plot or narrative than by a sequence of ideas. In the course of the book the reader is led through a carefully constructed series of descriptions that attempt to recreate the artist’s process. In the opening chapter, for example, Cezanne puts together a still life which in its agonizing complexity rises to the level of a kind of mini-drama. Elsewhere situations arise in which the artist’s eccentic personality is explored. Altogether, the book is a great read, informative as well as warm and humorous. Highly recommended.
